Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relation between self concept and the climacteric symptoms of middleaged women. The subjects for this study were 88 middle-aged women between 40 "and 60 years of age living in Seoul. Data were collected from April l to October 1, 1993, by means of a questionnaire.
The instruments used for this study were the self concept scale developed by Rosenberg and Chychunghun and a climacteric symptoms scale developed by the investgator. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, ttest, ANOVA, Pearson Professor, Department of Nursing, College of medicine, Han Yang University " Doctoral student in Department of Nursing, College of Medicine, Han Yang University correlation, Stepwise Multiple Regression, using the SPSS program.
The results of this study can be summarized as followings ;
1. There was of a negative correlation between self concept and the degree of selfreported climacteric symptoms (r=. -39, p<0.001).
2. The self concept had a mean score of 109.61, a standard deviation of 13.53, a minimum score 75.00, and a maximum score of 135.00.
3. The selfreported climacteric symptoms had a mean score of 58.73, a standard deviation 26.26, a minimum score 10.00, and a maximum score of 118. 00.
4. General characteristic variables significantly related to the level of self concept were educational level(F=2.94, p<0.05), monthly income(F=2.69, p<0.05), marrital satisfaction (F=6.35, p<0.01), health status(F=3.77, p<0.05).
General characteristic variables significantly related to the level of climacteric symptoms were the age, menopausal status(F=4.99, p<0.01), treatment related to disease(t=3.27, p<0.01), health status(F=5.44, p<0.01), health diet(t=4.03, p<0. 001).
5. In the stepwise multiple regression analysis, the main influencing variables on middleage women¢¥s selfreported climaterics symptoms were the number of deliveries, health status, health diet, self concept.
The finding of this study give significant basic data for implication of nursing intervention to pre-vent and relieve climacteric symptoms.
